Describe: Explain the process of your piece and what you made.
During the process of my piece, I had to cut out a slab of clay, remotely large, and flatten it by throwing it down on a hard surface constantly. During the molding process of making the actual plate, I sprayed cooking oil on my reference plate, added my already flattened clay onto the plate, took a damp sponge, and molded the clay onto the plate. During the leatherhard phase of the clay, I added three layers of underglaze on the surface. Once the underglaze had slightly dried, I added my image onto the plate and carved away at the underglaze to reveal my tree image. Analyze: How did you use design in your piece? How did you use Line, Space, and Contrast? On my piece, I made sure the plate had straight edges, creating even lines. On my reference image, (which I created) I have many lines and enough space to spread out the tree. I made sure my image was evenly added onto the plate so the space surrounding wasn't overly crowded. As for contrast, I wanted a bold image that I could clearly tell what it was, a tree. Interpret: How did you balance the black and white sections of the piece? Why did you pick the imagery you did? Judge: Is your pieces successful? Why or why not? What are you thoughts on the project and your piece in particular? To properly balance the project, I made sure my image was bold on the underglaze. My image represents a tree, I became inspired by the tree because I have many plants and decorations with trees included around my house. They represent growth and I love nature. This was my first ever time working with underglaze and practicing Sgraffito. I find my piece successful because I did as I was told and tried my best to make a decent plate. I enjoyed making the plate, it's like making food from scratch, it's better that way. Making a plate from scratch and adding my own personal touch made me really enjoy the process of this project. |
